This study examines Arabic language textbooks published in Europe between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries as reflections of linguistic policy. It explores how Orientalism intersected with the teaching of Arabic—whether religious, political, or for social refinement—and traces the emergence of “didactic diglossia.”
