First of all the book provides a comprehensive and commented collection and classification of consonantal sound changes in Indo-European, Semitic, and Uralic. The data is given in IPA-transcription and arranged according to phonetic and phonological criteria. From this collection preliminary typological tendencies are extracted, possible types of system change and „paths of phonologization“ become visible. Secondly, it discusses the impact of such information provided by diachronic typology when applied to some concrete problems concerning historical phonology and reconstruction, mostly in Indo-European languages.
