Voici enfin le premier corpus d’un monnayage phenicien a l’epoque de la domination perse achemenide (Ve-IVe s. av. J.-C.): celui de la cite de Sidon, qui porte sur 2608 monnaies en argent et en bronze. L’analyse numismatique a permis d’etudier notamment la production monetaire, le volume des emissions et les techniques de fabrication. Gryce a une methode originale adaptant les modeles statistiques a l’etude metrologique, on a pu calculer l’etalon modifie, sa surevaluation et sa devaluation successives, comprendre l’usage des monnaies en bronze et mesurer l’incroyable precision des monetaires sidoniens. L’atelier de Sidon s’est singularise par ses prouesses techniques et ses innovations (usage de moules a flans circulaires, inauguration de l’orientation des axes de coins a 12h, datation annuelle reguliere des monnaies a partir de 372). L’etude des legendes monetaires a enrichi notre connaissance de l’ecriture sidonienne; l’analyse de l’iconographie a apporte une foule d’informations sur les galeres, les chars, la mode vestimentaire, le religion et l’ideologie politique de cette cite. Cet ouvrage est aussi un ouvrage d’histoire sur Sidon et sur la politique occidentale de l’Empire perse, car les resultats de l’analyse numismatique, croises avec toutes les autres sources documentaires, fournissent des informations capitales sur cette periode florissante de la cite hegemonique de Sidon, et sur son declin a partir du moment ou sa politique a bascule dans une opposition grandissante contre l’occupation perse.
