English summary: After the long state of dormancy imposed by the Moderns on all “discourse on virtues,” it is obvious that contemporary discourse has once again taken up the issue of courage, not only in the media field – which is always quick to build new temples for one-day heroes – but even more so in certain types of political discourse that urge individuals to either excel, or to be self-responsible. In exploring this re-emergence, which is having the impact of an injunction, this essay aims to reacquaint the reader with the notion of courage by tracking its philosophical history in order to highlight the presuppositions and consequences of this new common call for individual heroism. French description: Le courage est-il un acte heroique, tel que mis en scene dans l’Iliade d’Homere, ou reside-t-il dans une patience discrete, valorisee par les chretiens ? Doit-il etre pense comme moderation, dans la lignee de la morale d’Aristote, ou comme exces politique a la facon machiavelienne ? S’agit-il d’une vertu individuelle, comme le suppose l’ethique grecque, ou d’une vertu collective et anonyme telle qu’une tradition republicaine plus romaine le suggere ? Est-il defini par l’action, comme chez Arendt, ou par la reflexion, comme chez Platon et Kant ? S’il est action, celle-ci doit-elle etre pensee dans son caractere radicalement politique ou, au contraire, comme le reclame Dewey, dans son contexte social ? S’il est par contre reflexion, celle-ci n’est-elle pas alors d’abord celle du philosophe sur sa propre actualite, comme le suggere Foucault ?
