Plus que tout autre, le fait violent semble difficile a elucider philosophiquement. Qu’elle apparaisse comme le pur dechainement irrationnel d’une pulsion destructrice ou l’organisation hierarchisee d’un pouvoir repressif, la violence apparait comme le mystere du refus humain de la raison. Pour la comprendre en dissipant les abus de langage, il importe alors de la distinguer de la force, de l’agressivite, du mal. et de l’alienation. Puis, pour etablir si la violence individuelle est si chaotique qu’en apparence, il conviendra de chercher ses mecanismes sous-jacents. Enfin, les systemes politiques tyranniques posent un probleme majeur, celui de la violence de l’Etat, collective et structuree.
