English description: Bedouins made history founding small states in the midst of cultural areas-these peculiar incidents of the 10th century, unique to the Islamic Middle Age, have prompted the assumption that the Fertile Crescent was ‘bedouinized’. Kurt Franz presents a critical overview of the shifts of power between the nomadic and sedentary peoples of that period. He approaches the Bedouin point of view and shows how territorial-institutional and mobile-predatory strategies of expansion were juxta-posed. He argues that protection by Bedouin emirs constituted a new model of indigenous government, which could have served as a regional alternative to the rule of military slaves. Jahrhunderts hat zum Wort von der Beduinisierung des Fruchtbaren Halbmondes gefuhrt. Kurt Franz legt eine kritische Gesamtdarstellung der Krafteverhaltnisse zwischen den Nomaden und Sesshaften jener Zeit vor. Er nahert sich dem beduinischen Blickwinkel an und zeigt das Nebeneinander von territorial-institutionellen und mobil-beuteorientierten Expansionsstrategien. Dabei wird die Auffassung vertreten, dass die Schutzherrschaft der Beduinenemire ein neues Modell indigener Herrschaft bildete, welches als regionale Alternative zur Herrschaft von Militarsklaven hatte dienen konnen.
Kurt Franz ist Islamwissenschaftler. Seine Forschung gilt der Gesellschaftsgeschichte des arabisch-islamischen Orients im Mittelalter, sachliche Schwerpunkte bilden populäre Aufstandsbewegungen, Sklaverei und Nomadismus. Zugleich widmet er sich der Entwicklung neuer, interdisziplinär orientierter Methoden der historiographie- und geographiegeschichtlichen Quellenkritik.
