Jahrhundert
by Sara Binay

Review - English "Although never more than a small minority of the population of the Near East, the camel nomads (badw) profoundly marked the imagination of Arabs in the premodern period. This study, originally a doctoral thesis prepared in the University of Halle's special research field (Sonderforschungsbereich) on nomads and sedentary people, examines the image of the Bedouin in two categories of Arabic literature, religious texts and belles lettres. After explaining her method and defining her terms (chap. 1), the author proposes a composite sketch of the Bedouin's environment, physical appearance, skills, and qualities as the texts portray them (chap. 2). She then distinguishes the themes associated with them: transmission of the Arab cultural heritage, "otherness" in relation to the urban authors of the texts, egalitarianism, religious indifference, and individualism. Bedouin women appear notably in love stories, chaste or otherwise, set in the desert (chap. 3).The presentation of Bedouin in religious texts (chap. 4) starts with the Qur'an, where they appear mostly as unreliable allfies and insincere Muslims, negligent in performing religious duties. The section on tafsir traces the evolution in the commentators' interpretation of a single verse, Q. 9.97 (on the Bedouin's lack of belief and constancy) from the eighth to the twelfth century and then treats other passages from commentaries and the sira literature that were understood as referring to the Bedouin. Finally the hadith collections are examined, in particular for the issues of whether Bedouin were expected to per-form the hijra or swear loyalty to the Prophet. In the religious texts under discussion, the Bedouin generally appears as oriented toward practical goals, a believer in reciprocity even in his relationship with God, critical of the cultural, political, and religious mainstream.Adab compilations bring out other aspects of the figure of the Bedouin (chap. 5). First, he is eloquent and has a command of correct classical Arabic. Second, although he lives in a harsh environment, he is associated with romantic qualities; Bedouin hospitality is proverbial, as are the couples of chaste Bedouin lovers. In contact with rulers, he is a frank critic and hard to control. Bedouin wives of members of the ruling Umayyad house are strong characters who do not adapt to court life; rather, they maintain ties with their clan and long for life in the steppe. Bedouin also appear in a special category of jokes, where they may be cheeky, smart, spongers, or simpleminded. In the brief conclusion, the findings of the various chapters are brought together. The author sees a distinction between religious texts, where the Bedouin is consistently portrayed as deviating from the essentially urban religious norm, and belles-lettres compilations, which convey a less uniform image and emphasize the role of eloquente. An appendix compares the place of the Bedouin in medieval Arabic literature with that of the peasant in medieval European literature, remarking en passant on the rare portrayal of the peasant (nabati) in Arabic texts.Binay has assembled a varied and interesting selection of material, and her analysis of it is perspicacious and generally convincing. She has succeeded in conveying salient traits of the figure of the Bedouin in medieval Arabic prose literature, showing how the discourse of the men of religion differed from that of purveyors of urban literarg culture and how for the latter the Bedouin was an ambiguous figure. At the same time, readers are left with questions. The first concerns the choice of sources, for which readers are referred to an unpublished report on the special research field. Thus, the discrepancy between the period mentioned in the title and the actual date of some of the sources, such as Yaqut (twelfth-thirteenth century), al-Qurtubi (thirteenth century), and al-Ibshihi (fifteenth century), is not explained.Equally unexplained is the absence of discussion about the Ayyam al-`arab. This collection of accounts of pre- and early Islamic tribal feuds, in which Bedouin figure prominently, is well represented in some compilations, notably Al-iqd al-farid and the Kitab al-aghani. Unlike the texts Binay analyzes, in which the Bedouin are individuals usually interacting with inhabitants of the settled regions, the Bedouin of the Ayyam behave largely as members of a group. The same Bedouin group loyalty finds expression, for instance, in the 'Iqd, in the section on women petitioners of caliphs (ignored by Binay), when one of them asks Mu'awiya for a hundred camels to support her tribe and help solve tribal disputes. This collective dimension cannot be ignored.Binay rightly admits that her work needs to be complemented by an examination of early Arabic poetry. Yet poetry is well represented in the adab compilations under discussion, which are typically combinations of prose and verse. It contributes significantly to the image of the Bedouin, both as portrayed by outsiders and as speakers in their own right, reflecting, for instance, their extraordinary gilt of observation of the natural world. Can one exclude it from such a study-for whatever reason-without doing violence to the nature of Arabic belles lettres? The bibliography lacks some publications, notably the Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an articles (2002) "Arabs" and "Bedouin," and recent research on early Islamic history and culture is not always taken into account, with the occasional resulting blunder. The transliterations from Arabic have an astonishing number of misprints.Nonetheless, Die Figur des Beduinen in der arabischen Literatur is a useful contribution, which scholars concerned with the image of nomads in the Arab world will certainly need to consult.HILARY KILPATRICK, LausanneIn: Speculum. 103 (2008). 4-5.
