Emden war Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts ein wichtiger Ort der Reformation. Anders als heute gehorte er zu den grossten Stadten im Deutschen Reich und hatte zugleich auch den grossten Seehafen Europas. Die politische Situation in Ostfriesland und das internationale Geprage dieser Stadt bildeten den Hintergrund fur die grosse Vielfalt reformatorischer Ansatze, die es hier gegeben hat. Emden wurde zu einem Sammelbecken religios Verfolgter und zum Fluchtpunkt einer intellektuellen Elite, die von hier aus Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Reformation in anderen europaischen Landern nahm. Dies geschah nicht zuletzt durch den Druck und die Verbreitung andernorts verbotener Literatur. Die Stadt und ihre Kirche wurden deshalb als ‘Moederkerk’ (Mutterkirche) der niederlandischen Reformation bezeichnet. Am Ende verwandelte der sich hier durchsetzende Calvinismus Emden in einen quasiautonomen Stadtstaat.
