“Der funfsprachige Worterspiegel” (The Compendium of Five Languages) is the most comprehensive multilingual dictionary of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and was probably compiled between 1790 and 1794. Arranged according to subject categories, it covers 18.671 lexemes in the languages Manchurian, Tibetan, Mongolian, Turki and Chinese. The dictionary provides deep insights into the physical, intellectual, administrative and linguistic world of the Qing Empire. It comprises one of the largest known collections of transcriptions for Tibetan and Turki. In terms of its scope and historical significance it is probably regarded as the standard and unrivalled work on multilingual lexicography of the Qing period. The text has now been fully revised and Romanized for the first time, containing a critical text commentary, as well as German translations and annotation along with extensive notes on the sources of the vocabulary and the etymology of the Turki material. Index volumes for all five languages are currently in preparation.

Nach Sachgebieten geordnet umfasst es 18671 Lexeme in den Sprachen Manjurisch, Tibetisch, Mongolisch, Turki und Chinesisch. Tibetisch und Turki werden zusatzlich durch manjurische Transkriptionen erganzt, deren Variantenreichtum Ruckschlusse auf einzelne Schreiber und Dialekteinflusse des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts zulasst. Das Worterbuch eroffnet umfassende Einblicke in die materielle, geistige, administrative und sprachliche Welt des Qing-Reiches, ist eines der grossten bekannten Transkriptionsmonumente fur Tibetisch und Turki und darf nach Umfang und historischer Bedeutung als Standardwerk der multilingualen Lexikographie der Qing-Zeit schlechthin bezeichnet werden. Der Text liegt nun erstmals vollstandig revidiert und romanisiert vor. Neben textkritischen Anmerkungen sowie deutschen Ubersetzungen und Erlauterungen enthalt der Band umfangreiche Hinweise zu Textquellen des Wortschatzes (e.g. der alteren chinesischen Literatur) sowie zur Etymologie des Turki-Materials, fur welches zahlreiche Wortwurzeln persischen und arabischen Ursprungs nachgewiesen werden. Zudem werden in der Wiedergabe samtlicher Schriften einschliesslich der chinesischen Zeichen individuelle Schreibvarianten berucksichtigt. Indexbande fur alle funf Sprachen sind in Vorbereitung.
