Le Dominicain autrichien Heinrich Denifle (1844-correspondant etranger AIBL 1897-1905) fut un des grands historiens de la fin du XIXe siecle. Il a laisse une oeuvre considerable et souvent novatrice, toujours lue aujourd’hui, portant aussi bien sur l’histoire des universites medievales ou la mystique rhenane que sur la guerre de Cent ans, la crise de la fin du Moyen Age ou Luther. Grand voyageur, chercheur internationalement reconnu, il etait au coeur des reseaux savants de son epoque. Sous-archiviste du Vatican, il fut un des acteurs du renouveau intellectuel et scientifique de l’Eglise et de la papaute au temps du pape Leon XIII, dont il fut proche. Le colloque organise a l’AIBL et a la fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca en decembre 2012 s’est attache a explorer la vie et l’oeuvre de ce grand savant a travers seize contributions en francais ou en allemand, qui s’ordonnent selon les cinq grands themes suivants: Les etapes d’une vie ; A Rome et aux Archives du Vatican; L’histoire des Universites ; L’edition du Chartularium Universitatis Parisiensis; De la philosophie et de la theologie a l’histoire ecclesiastique et profane.
