English summary: When detached from a specific art genre, the concept of melodrama can be understood as a form of modern cultural practice for perceiving the world, which appeals to a highly emotional state and to the expression of something that is morally-occultist. Within theatre, the concept of melodrama can be regarded as a form of the production of meaning that functions with heightened feelings, moral polarization, antithetical characterization, rhetorical exaggeration and inter-textual and inter-medial games. The contributors to this volume examine the pledge inherent in the meaning of the compound ‘melos’ – song and ‘drama’ – action, the aesthetic within the equality of body language, music and poetry, as well as a democratic interpretation of the world and of human existence for all, by means of an interdisciplinary dialogue between German, English/American studies, Romance Studies, drama, music and film studies German description: Abgelost von einem bestimmten Kunstgenre wird das Melodramatische als moderne kulturelle Praxis der Weltwahrnehmung gefasst, die auf hochste Emotionalitat verweist und zur Ausdrucksform eines Moralisch-Okkulten wird. Als ein Modus der Bedeutungsproduktion, der mit Gefuhlssteigerung, moralischer Polarisierung, antithetischer Figurenzeichnung, rhetorischer Uberzeichnung, intertextuellem und intermedialem Spiel arbeitet, lasst sich das Melodramatische in Theater, Literatur, Musik und Film verfolgen. Den Versprechen, die in der Wortbedeutung des Kompositums aus ‘melos’ – Lied und ‘drama’ – Handlung liegen, dem asthetischen einer Gleichberechtigung von Korpersprache, Musik und Dichtung sowie einem demokratischen einer Lesbarkeit der Welt und der menschlichen Existenz fur alle, gehen die Beitrage dieses Bandes im interdisziplinaren Dialog zwischen Germanistik, Anglistik/Amerikanistik, Romanistik, Theater-, Musik- und Filmwissenschaft nach.
