The modernization and liberalization process of the churches during the 1960s had a profound impact on the life of the wives of Protestant pastors. Using the example of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover this book examines the non-institutional side of the pastoral ministry from the Reformation to the end of the 20th century and shows the tragic consequences of a profound change: the change from religiously justified forms of knowledge to a social technological mode of thinking. The late philosopher and theologian Ivan Illich commented this study with the words: “a kind of key to open hidden, suppressed or tabooed aspects not primarily of the church but of social history.”
