The General Norms constitute the first part of the Code of Canon Law, which Pope John Paul II promulgated in 1983 for the worldwide Catholic Church of the Latin tradition. It is applied in some 2400 dioceses in countries with their own legal cultures. This commentary in Dutch, which is largely based on international books and articles, presents the church’s legal framework on the sources of law, legislation and custom, on the acceptance of law, on the various acts of government in the church, on their relationship with law, on the power to govern the church and its different functions, on physical and juridic persons, and on the ecclesiastical offices, which enable clerics and laypeople to direct the church. The book offers a good insight into the forces of law, the distinction of powers and the rules on public functions in the Church. A long tradition from the Middle Ages is linked with new approaches since the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
