Die Frage ist nicht, ob es Gott gibt. Die Frage ist, ob Gott vertrauenswurdig ist. Sie beschaftigte Ulrich Knellwolf in vierzig Jahren theologischer Arbeit als Pfarrer. Denn Glaube heisst fur ihn: Vertrauen aufgrund von gemachten Erfahrungen. Wenn wir aber die Erfahrung einer heillosen Welt machen – warum sollten wir ausgerechnet Gott als Schopfer dieser Welt vertrauen? Ulrich Knellwolf entwickelt eine Theologie, die auf Geschichten besteht: eigenen, fremden, biblischen. Geschichten, die er mit seinen langjahrigen Lekturen verbindet: Er liest die Erzahlung von Abraham mit Freud, die Geschichte vom blinden Bartimaus mit Platon, das Liebesgebot mit Jeremias Gotthelfs “Kaserei in der Vehfreude”. Er liest das Markusevangelium als narrative Oppositionsschrift gegen die Theologie von Paulus und dessen Sunden- und Gnadenlehre. Er erhebt Einspruch gegen eine Theologie, die den Menschen fur schuldig erklaren muss, damit nicht Gott in Verdacht gerat, ein Bosewicht zu sein. Mit Abraham, Hiob und nicht zuletzt mit Jesus und seinem Schrei am Kreuz besteht er darauf, dass es anders gedacht war und anders werden muss.
