‘Verantwortung’ ist zu einem Schlüsselbegriff geworden, mit dessen Hilfe sich die moderne Gesellschaft Gewissheit darüber verschafft, welche Werte ihr wichtig sind, an wen sich die damit verbundenen Ansprüche richten und wie diesen Ansprüchen Genüge getan werden soll. In der Ringvorlesung im Berliner Guardini Kolleg wurde das Thema der Verantwortung sowohl im Blick auf bestimmte Felder wie die von Kultur, Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Medien und zukünftige Generationen als auch in bezug auf besondere Agenturen der Verantwortung wie die politischen Institutionen, die Universität, die Kirchen und die europäische Staatengemeinschaft erörtert. In acht Vorlesungen sind namhafte Referenten, die im jeweiligen Bereich in hervorgehobener Weise Verantwortung getragen haben oder tragen und die im Horizont eigener Erfahrung zu den aktuellen Fragen bzw. Problemen Stellung zu nehmen vermögen, der Frage nach der Verantwortung nachgegangen.
