English summary: An introductory section illustrates the function of the murals and their iconography. In addition it discusses the disappearance of the genre at the beginning of the modern era and its rediscovery from the mid-19th century. The restorations of the 19th and 20th centuries in turn reflect the history of cultural heritage preservation on the Rhine from its beginnings to the present day. A final chapter is devoted to technique and looks in more detail at the characteristics of fresco-secco paintings. The catalog presents around 40 listed monuments and their murals. These include the former collegiate churches in Oberwesel and St. Goar, the former Cistercian monastery in Eberbach and castles in Rheinstein and Reichenstein. – A comprehensive introduction to the medieval wall paintings of the Middle Rhine with a critical examination of the collection – Rediscovery of an important but long unappreciated art form German description: Ein einfuhrender Teil erlautert die Funktion der Wandbilder und ihre Ikonographie.
