Before 1800, the German word ‘Wahn’, today associated with ‘Wahnsinn’ (madness), was situated in a quite different semantic field: In a more positive or neutral sense it reflected the perspectivity and the fragmentarity of human perception. Thus, it has been established as a central concept for premodern understanding of subjectivity, poetics, epistemology, social performance and communication as well as conceptualizations of truth.
