Without dramatizing or denying the reality of our lives in late modernity, the renowned and Palme d’Or-winning director Abbas Kiarostami, through his cinema oscillating between documentary and feature film, paves transnational ways out of the crisis of the times. These are not presented like a moral lesson offering an artificial pseudo-solution. Rather, they reverse the logic that has become the norm in our everyday lives and open a window to a different way of seeing. This book highlights how Kiarostami’s films poetically and humorously convey the lightness of reality through images instead of words, how they redefine being-in-time and being-in-the-world, and how they foster a light-hearted reflection that reconciles with reality and its elegiac moments. Masterpieces such as CLOSE-UP, AND LIFE GOES ON, and TASTE OF CHERRY reveal a way out that turns away from alienation, allowing a primal, ‘simple’ sense of life to shimmer through, particularly in the heart of late modern everyday life.
