The history of transnational Iranian art cinema is a testament to the power of (moving) images to resist systems of power and influence socio-political conditions. In a despotic system, this cinema became the voice of freedom and was even more powerful and enlightening on a social level than the medium of writing. Subsequently, Iranian art cinema became a powerful weapon in the struggle of women against the systematic suppression of their rights in the word-dominated, misogynistic male state. Thus, enlightened dissidence and transnationality are two characteristics of Iranian art cinema that are explored in this book and provide a fundamental examination of this cinema.
