English summary: Be it Bacchus, Vulcan, Mars or Venus – when the Spanish court painter Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) paints the ancient gods, it is like seeing them for the first time. His mythological paintings unsettle conventions of seeing and thinking, thus implicating the viewer in primary questions of image and mythology. Hanno Tiesbrummel’s approach follows the suggestion inherent in the paintings by simultaneously looking for their meaning and for the ways in which they constitute this meaning through form and presence. This first systematic study of a whole group of major works opens up fresh approaches to Velazquez and to the study of art in general.
