A Selection

Highlights from the sale of the James M. Collier Collection of Ancient Greek and Roman Coins, the proceeds of which funded the endowment of the newly established Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics.
In 2025, a special collection of ancient Greek and Roman coins—gods, owls, dolphins, and Caesars, lovingly acquired and studiously catalogued over the course of a lifetime—went on the auction block. Sold with the prior blessing of its creator, the late James M. Collier, and under the guidance of his wife, Carole Anne Menzi Collier, the collection would give even more to scholars through its dispersal than it gave to Collier through the years of its creation, for it would fund the newly established Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics.
Drawing from the auction catalogues, this book presents a choice selection of these coins, each one carefully selected by Carole Anne to represent both the larger collection and Professor Collier himself—an engineer, art historian, painter, and scholar with a passion for the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The coins in this book illustrate his gift to numismatic scholarship.
