Das Martyrium in Spatantike und fruhem Mittelalter. Internationale Tagung in Rom vom 20. bis 23. Februar 2019

Sind Attentater, die im Namen Gottes toten, Martyrer? Darf die Bereitschaft, fur Gott zu sterben, mit Gewalttatigkeit einhergehen? Wem kommt im strengen Sinne der Ehrentitel “Martyrer” zu, wer ist bloa unerleuchteter, fehlgeleiteter Fanatiker? – In der offentlichen Debatte werden Dschihadisten immer wieder vorschnell als Martyrer bezeichnet, die durch den ,,Kampf gegen die Unglaubigen” mit Belohnungen im Paradies rechnen durfen. Kommt ihnen aber wirklich der Ehrentitel ,,Martyrer” zu? Angesichts einer geradezu inflationaren Verwendung des Wortes “Martyrer” in den Printmedien und dem allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch besonders im Zusammenhang mit Terroranschlagen und Selbstmordattentaten erschien eine historisch-kritische Ruckfrage nach den Ursprungen des Martyriumsbegriffs in den verschiedenen religiosen Kontexten unbedingt vonnoten. Dazu fand vom 20. bis 23. Februar 2019 am Campo Santo Teutonico im Romischen Institut der Gorres-Gesellschaft (RIGG) eine internationale und interdisziplinare Fachtagung statt, welche von der Forschungsstelle Christlicher Orient an der Katholischen Universitat Eichstatt-Ingolstadt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Lehrstuhl fur Alte Kirchengeschichte und Patrologie sowie der Stiftungsprofessur Prinz Max von Sachsen des Bistums Eichstatt fur Theologie des Christlichen Ostens und dem RIGG ausgerichtet wurde. Ihr Fokus lag auf der historischen Herausarbeitung eines heuristisch fruchtbaren Martyrerbegriffs in Spatantike und fruhem Mittelalter. Der vorliegende Tagungsband versammelt die vorgelegten Beitrage.
