Dieses Buch untersucht nun erstmals die Stadtparks und diesbezugliche soziale und kulturelle Zusammenhange im grossen Gebiet der ehemaligen osterreichischen Monarchie und stellt sie im (west-)europaischen Kontext dar. Zeitlich ist das Thema von der Josephinischen Aufklarung, wo als wichtigste Ausdrucksform des aufsteigenden Burgertums erstmals gestaltete Grunbereiche dem Volk zuganglich gemacht wurden, bis zum Zusammenbruch der Monarchie im Ersten Weltkrieg gespannt. Stadtparks, Schmuckplatze, Kurparks und Stadtlandschaftsverschonerungen, sowie Gartner, burgerliche Organisationen bzw. Initiativen und Bepflanzungen werden ausfuhrlich behandelt.
