Im Gesprach zwischen Judentum, Christentum und Islam wird immer wieder versucht, Abraham als gemeinsame Grundlage zu mobilisieren. Das erweist sich bei naherem Zusehen als unredlich und unmoglich. Der Vortrag zeigt, wie die historisch ausserst vage Gestalt Abrahams von allen drei monotheistischen Religionen dazu benutzt wurde, die eigene Form von Religion als die Abrahams und damit als die alteste, reinste und wurdigste darzustellen: Abraham als erster Jude, als erster Christ, als erster Moslem. Diese fundamentalistische Selbstverherrlichung kann nur uberwunden werden, wenn wir bereit sind, dem historisch-kritisch erarbeiteten Befund Gewicht zu geben und in einem Versuch vertikaler Okumene zu sehen, dass alle drei monotheistischen Religionen Teile eines grossen Traditionsstroms sind, der hinter sie zuruckreicht und wichtige Quellen in den polytheistischen Religionen des Alten Orients und der griechisch-romischen Welt hat. Ebenso wichtig wie die beschrankte individuelle Identitat jeder Religion sind die Beziehungen, in denen sie de facto stehen und die anerkannt und gepflegt werden mussen.
