Apres l’edition des questions 1 a 5 du prologue au Commentaire des Sentences redige par Jean de Reading, qui se trouve a Oxford en meme temps que Guillaume d’Ockham, sont editees ici les six questions de la premiere distinction. Ces questions, tres developpees, concernent la fruitio, la dilectio, la delectatio de Dieu. Elles examinent la possibilite pour l’homme de connaitre et d’aimer immediatement l’essence divine, la vision beatifique, la jouissance de l’essence divine sans celle d’une personne ou d’une personne sans l’autre. Dans ces questions sont exposees et discutees les positions de nombreux theologiens : Alexandre de Hales, Thomas d’Aquin, Henri de Gand et Jean Duns Scot, mais aussi Durand de Saint-Pourcain, Pierre de Sutton, Robert de Cowton, Pierre d’Auriole, Guillaume d’Alnwick, Jean de Thornton, Richard de Drayton et Jean Lutterell. Elles presentent ainsi, en plus de la position propre de Jean de Reading, un panorama des doctrines qui se sont succedees et affrontees sur ces sujets depuis le milieu du XIIIe siecle
