Der Thorner Tumult im Juli 1724 – Ausschreitungen zwischen den protestantischen und katholischen Einwohnern der Stadt – und in seiner Folge der Prozess gegen die Beschuldigten, der mit Todesurteilen endete (»Thorner Blutgericht«), waren Ereignisse von enormer Bedeutung für das Leben der Stadt. Sie fanden aber auch im polnisch-litauischen Staat und in ganz Europa großen Widerhall. Der Band enthält zwölf Texte, die die Ursachen der Ereignisse von 1724, das Bild einer konfessionell gespaltenen Stadt unter verschiedenen Aspekten, den Verlauf der Ereignisse und des Gerichtsverfahrens ebenso nachzeichnen wie die Folgen: sowohl die unmittelbaren – etwa die internationale politische Spannung oder die Verluste der Lutheraner, die die Marienkirche aufgeben mussten – als auch die weitreichenden Folgen wie die Transformation der Ereignisse in einen Erinnerungsort.
The Toruń Tumult of July 1724 – violent clashes between local Protestants and Catholics – and the subsequent trial of the accused, which also resulted in death sentences (“The Toruń Blood Court”), were events of enormous significance for the life of the city. They also resonated strongly throughout the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and across Europe. The volume contains twelve contributions that examine the causes of the events of 1724, portray the image of a confessionally divided city from various perspectives, and reconstruct both the course of the events and the judicial proceedings, as well as their consequences: both the immediate ones – such as international political tensions or the losses suffered by the Lutherans, who were forced to relinquish St. Mary’s Church – and the long-term effects, including the transformation of these events into a site of memory.
