English summary: This study on political iconography examines the continuing afterlife of the equestrian statue as an expression of power. Focussing on the period since the toppling of absolutist monuments, it explores the creation of “democratic” equestrian statues and paintings, their re-modelling during the Restauration, and the automobile as the horse’s successor when it comes to symbolizing power.
