How was imperial rule justified in the late antique Eastern Roman Empire? In order to answer this question, the book explores the significance of republican interpretations for the period from about 457 to 550 AD. The combination of criticism of monarchy, end-time expectations and the fact that kingdoms arose on former Roman soil that were not ruled by an emperor, unfolded a threatening burden of justification.
