Ce livre a pour but de correler l’apparition de l’ opinion publique au refoulement de la croyance religieuse dans l’espace prive. Comme Bayle le vit aussitot, cela posait le probleme de savoir alors comment definir ce qui permet aux hommes de vivre ensemble a peu pres pacifiquement. Est-ce encore une orthodoxie, mais laique – quelque chose comme une morale naturelle, un catechisme du citoyen? Ou cela ne peut-il pas etre une institutionnalisation du desaccord telle que celui-ci, au lieu de representer un obstacle a la paix, devienne le ressort meme du destin collectif? L’opinion publique fut le nom dispute de ce programme grandiose, mais peut-etre aussi vain, celui d’une societe effectivement athee.
