Guillaume Chenu de Chalezac, from an old Protestant family of Guyenne, was born in Bordeaux in 1672. He embarked for Madeira in 1686 in order to avoid forced conversion to Catholicism. After his adventure in South Africa, in October 1689 he went to Germany.
