Que la ville soit un objet eminemment culturel ne fait guere de doute: elle se presente comme une agglomeration de constructions artificielles, concues par des architectes et des urbanistes. Elle temoigne de leur savoir-faire et apparait de part en part fabriquee de main d’homme. Mais suffit-il de construire des villes pour les rendre habitables? Le bon usage d’une ville suppose l’appropriation de sa grammaire par ses habitants. Car habiter une ville est une question davantage ethique et politique que technique. L’ame d’une ville se loge dans la symbolique qu’elle tisse. Ce n’est qu’a condition de lui permettre de faire signe qu’une ville peut constituer un monde familier. Aussi s’agit-il ici de renouveler l’approche de l’urbain, en soulignant que les pretentions de l’urbanisme resteront vaines sans apprentissage de l’urbanite.
