Port-Royal a marque pour longtemps la culture biblique francaise avec la fameuse Bible de Sacy, admiree par beaucoup pour la beaute de sa langue. Cette traduction de la Bible a deja suscite des etudes, qui eclairent son contexte et ses enjeux, mais on manque encore d’une synthese sur la maniere dont l’hermeneutique biblique etait pratiquee dans le milieu intellectuel lie au monastere. Le colloque “Port-Royal et l’interpretation des Ecritures” en propose une esquisse. Deux axes ont ete privilegiees : d’une part, rendre compte des differents contextes ou l’on trouve, a Port-Royal, une interpretation des Ecritures, aussi bien sous forme de traduction que d’explication; d’autre part, situer Port-Royal dans l’histoire longue de l’exegese. Le rayonnement intellectuel de Port-Royal dans la societe francaise arrive a un moment ou le rapport a la Bible des chretiens en general, et des catholiques en particulier, est en mutation profonde. La reflexion hermeneutique de Port-Royal parait assez libre : les autorites ecclesiales lui reprochent un defaut de catholicite, et Richard Simon, un defaut de scientificite. Mais cette reflexion n’est pas hors-sol. Elle revendique, outre un retour a l’Ecriture, l’heritage des Peres de l’Eglise, dont l’uvre exegetique fondatrice est largement reconnue. Port-Royal s’inscrit ainsi dans le renouveau des etudes patristiques au XVIIe siecle.
