Starting from an analysis of Hobbes’s political thought in the intellectual context of mechanistic philosophy, this volume develops a materialist critique of the idealist foundations of modern science. Hobbes attempts to establish a stable foundation for all sciences that would also confer upon politics the universality and indisputability that Descartes attributed to the nascent field of mechanical physics. This endeavor generates a wide range of problems in Hobbes’s materialist agenda, which are reflected in his political theory.
