English description: Alain Bonfand subjects his undisputed erudition to a strict philosophical method. He took the time to become a phenomenologist, in all its rigor. Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas and Henry led him to recognize the painting as what it is: a phenomenon. A phenomenon all the more phenomenal in that, unlike the more mundane phenomena, its only goal it pure and total appearance, without reserve or restraint. It is a question of experiencing it as a burst of unbearable visibility, which emerges from its native invisibility. It is a question, therefore, of opening within the painting the intersection of the visible that it portrays with the invisible that underlies it. A canvas that appears without cause or purpose, the painting adds visible to the world. It even adds itself to the world. This is why we cannot see it without suffering the repercussion. We must therefore identify or at least guess the fundamental tonalities that it awakes in us and for which it is important to us. It will also be necessary to assign to death, joy, and perhaps even love their own visible tones. (J.-L. Marion)
