English summary: Europe discovered Buddhism in the early 19th century. Hegel, Cousin, Renan, Schopenhauer, Gobineau and Nietzsche interpreted it as a form of nihilism. While some – Christians – were offended by its annihilistic perspective, others, like Schopenhauer, perceived it as a confirmation of their pessimism. Nietzsche adopted the so-called tragic neo-Pagan opposing view.
