Nach 1920 wurden die bis dahin landlich gepragten Vororte Steglitz und Zehlendorf zu Stadtbezirken Gross-Berlins ausgebaut. Die sudwestliche Peripherie der neuen Metropole entwickelte sich mit modernen stadtischen Wohnanlagen, individuellen Einfamilienhausern und spektakularen Grosssiedlungen zum Testfall des modernen Stadtebaus und des Neuen Bauens. Der Band erlautert die Schaffung der Einheitsgemeinde Gross-Berlin, stellt neue Akteure und Strategien beim rasant zunehmenden Wohnungsbau der Zwischenkriegszeit vor und prasentiert Beispiele des modernen Siedlungsbaus. Das Zehlendorfer Rathaus und das Strandbad Wannsee sind prominente Beispiele des Neuen Bauens fur die Gemeinschaft.
