Mit der vorliegenden, kommentierten Edition wird zunachst der lateinische Text von Melanchthons Historia Martini Lutheri neu ediert. Die beigegebene deutsche Ubersetzung stellt den Text aber auch im Latein nicht so geubten Leserinnen und Lesern zur Verfugung. Der Herausgeber zeigt auf, dass die ubliche Psychologisierung der Charakterunterschiede von Luther und Melanchthon ihre unterschiedlichen Einstellungen zu den zentralen reformatorischen Themen eher verdeckt – oft zu Lasten Melanchthons. Wo stellt sich das Gleichgewicht zwischen dem von Rom mit dem Tod bedrohten Reformator und dem weltoffenen humanistischen Theologen wieder ein? Harald Weinacht macht deutlich, wie stark diese Fragen Einfluss nehmen auf aktuelle Entscheidungen zur Okumene und zur Kirchenreform.
