Mein Name ist Eugen. Das sagt genug, denn eine solche Jugend ist schwer. Im nachsten Juli bin ich dreizehn Jahre alt, und der Eduard behauptet, das sei ein Geburtsfehler, der sich leider nur sehr langsam korrigiere. Am nachsten Neujahr in acht Tagen wird er vierzehn, und das sei doch ein ganz anderes Gefuhl. So beginnt Klaus Schadelins Schweizer Kinderbuchklassiker aus dem Jahr 1955. Eugen hat nicht nur Schwierigkeiten mit seinem Namen, sondern auch mit seinen Eltern und seinen Lehrern. Deshalb heckt er Streiche aus, die ihm und seinem Freund Wrigley, und daruber hinaus jedem Leser und jeder Leserin in der Seele gut tun. Klaus Schadelin wurde 1918 in Bern an der Herrengasse geboren. Er absolvierte ein Theologiestudium in Bern, war Pfarrer in Attiswil (Kanton Bern), in Hunibach am Thunersee und danach neun Jahre in Bern an der Petruskirche. Er wurde schliesslich als Gemeinderat der Stadt Bern gewahlt, wo er 16 Jahre lang als stadtischer Fursorge- und Gesundheitsdirektor amtierte. 1973 erlitt er einen Herzinfarkt und wurde darauf fruhzeitig pensioniert. Er war verheiratet und Vater von drei Kindern. Klaus Schadelin verstarb am 13. Dezember 1987 im Alter von 69 Jahren.
