Margarete Gutschow lavoro come archeologa a Roma presso l’ Istituto Archeologico Germanico durante la prima meta del Novecento. Nata a Lubecca nel 1871, dedico interamente la sua vita alla ricerca, collaborando con importanti studiosi a progetti di notevole rilievo scientifico. Per molti anni si occupo dell’ allestimento del Museo della catacomba di Pretestato, famoso per sarcofagi di grande pregio storico-artistico, pubblicati per la prima volta dalla stessa Gutschow. La sua riconosciuta competenza nel settore della scultura funeraria le valse il titolo di Socia Ordinaria dell’ Istituto Archeologico Germanico nel 1935. Attraverso la lettura di inediti documenti d’ archivio e stato possibile ripercorrere la vita e il lavoro della studiosa, figura interessante anche per comprendere il ruolo svolto in quegli anni dalle donne, in special modo in un settore cosi peculiare come quello dell’ archeologia.
