Geschlecht als dynastische und als soziale Kategorie war ein Kriterium fur den Zugang zur Macht und zur Legitimation vormoderner Herrschaftsausubung. Mit welchen kulturellen und sozialen Erwartungen waren Herrscherinnen und Herrscher konfrontiert? Wie nutzten sie die ihnen zur Verfugung stehenden Handlungsspielraume? Welche Personen und Institutionen partizipierten an herrschaftlicher Macht? Die Beitrage widmen sich diesen Fragen zwischen Mittelalter und Fruhmoderne. Indem sie Geschlecht als mehrfach relationale Kategorie systematisch in Bezug zu anderen wie Verwandtschaft, Herkunft oder Lebensalter setzen, zeichnen sie ein komplexes Bild der Veranderungen, Ambivalenzen und Widerspruche, denen – immer auch, aber nie ausschliesslich – geschlechtlich codierte Herrschaft um 1500 unterworfen war.
