Almost anywhere at any time it is possible to make an absorbing study of plant or animal life: it occurs in such variety and abundance in the garden, the parks, the town, the countryside and even in the home. The problem so often encountered by the beginner, however, is knowing where to start – and how. We need not be content with casual observations. We may wish to examine features in much more detail, to collect specimens, to write up nature notes of lasting value, to record in photography or sound, or study the relationships between plants and animals in a particular environment or season of the year. Or we might prefer to find out all we can about the habits of a single species of plant or animal and its distribution in a particular region or area. There are sections on identification, including insects and birds; a section covering the classification of plants and animals; one on plant groups and their changing pattern or succession; others on ecology in relation to habitat, food chains, and aspects of animal behaviour including feeding habits, camouflage and mimicry. For readers seeking further guidance, the last chapter is packed with ideas for practical projects. Indeed, this is a book which shows Nature observation to be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable hobbies there is.
