L’histoire du culte chretien dans l’occident medieval s’est elaboree grace a l’etude de trop rares temoins manuscrits, ecrits en latin. Pour les comprendre et les interpreter, il importe de conjuguer les methodes de l’histoire, de la philologie, de la theologie. On decouvre alors que ces sources, quoiqu’occupees aux celebrations chretiennes, sont solidaires du contexte culturel de l’epoque ou elles ont ete ecrites : la liturgie est le reflet aussi bien que l’agent de sa culture. L’epoque carolingienne est un exemple particulierement interessant pour l’observation de ce phenomene, en raison de l’importance des bouleversements politiques, sociaux et culturels qui la traversent. C’est une epoque de reforme politique et religieuse, et de forte evolution de la liturgie : en temoignent la modification, en pays francs, des sources de provenance romaine ou l’apparition des commentaires allegoriques. Ces nouveautes traduisent le developpement de nouvelles mentalites religieuses, bien eloignees de celles qui avaient produit les sources romaines dont se reclame le nouvel empire. Adapter les rites et leur comprehension aux mentalites du nord des Alpes pour leur permettre de celebrer correctement le culte et de former les fideles a constitue le defi des liturgistes carolingiens. L’ouvrage est ainsi amene a mettre en evidence, comme cle de comprehension de la liturgie medievale, le rapport constant que celle-ci entretient avec son milieu culturel et ses evolutions.
