Le fasc. 40 du Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, le premier concernant le Nord de la France, est consacre aux collections du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille (139 vases) et a celles, beaucoup plus modestes, de l’Universite de Lille III-Charles-de-Gaulle (19 vases et 6 fragments). L’ensemble se revele tres heterogene, ce qui a rendu l’etude assez longue et parfois difficile. L’origine des objets demeure malheureusement tres souvent inconnue. L’essentiel est issu de la collection Campana; quant au reste (fonds ancien, dons, achats, depots), la disparition des archives lors de la Premiere Guerre mondiale n’a pas permis, bien souvent, d’etablir leur provenance. On retrouvera dans cet ouvrage les series corinthienne, attique, italiote et etrusque communes a de nombreux musees de province, mais aussi quelques productions moins connues. Une place a part – avec planches en couleurs – a ete reservee a une oeuvre tres particuliere attribuee au peintre C. Beaucoup de pieces etaient inedites, dont une oenochoe du groupe des Comastes, tres interessante, et une amphore paestane en excellent etat de conservation. Il faut signaler la difficulte d’acces aux oeuvres exposees, malencontreusement releguees dans des niches murales, sous des cloches de verre epais tres lourdes, ce qui necessitait un materiel de levage imposant et des manoeuvres delicates. Cet ouvrage contribuera a une meilleure connaissance de ces collections et pourrait constituer le point de depart de la publication des ceramiques grecques du musees du Nord.
