Le trois-mats Bounty fait route vers l’Angleterre apres avoir embarque a Tahiti des plants d’arbres a pain quand, un matin d’avril 1789, le jeune officier Fletcher Christian – entrainant avec lui une partie de l’equipage – s’empare du commandement et abandonne dans une chaloupe au large des iles de la Societe son capitaine William Bligh et dix-huit matelots avec cinq jours de vivres. Bligh navigue quarante-trois jours avant d’aborder dans l’ile de Timor, se revelant un remarquable meneur d’hommes et un excellent navigateur. La justice entre alors en action, mais ne saisit a Tahiti qu’un certain nombre des mutins. Christian et neuf autres ont disparu avec le Bounty. L’enigme de leur sort ne se resout que par la decouverte en 1808 de la communaute de l’ile de Pitcairn. Les raisons de la rebellion, l’odyssee de Bligh (qui finira amiral et mourra en 1817 a soixante-trois ans), la tragique ou l’etonnante destinee des mutins, c’est ce que relate Sir John Barrow d’apres les archives du proces et ses propres recherches dans ce recit publie en 1831, a la fois authentique et passionnant, d’une des plus celebres mutineries de la marine anglaise.
