Rhetoric used to teach a certain type of gaze so that a work could be perceived as a totality. The thesis of this work is therefore that the rhetorical gaze is–or was–a synthetic gaze. This sort of thesis requires returning to a very classical problem, that of a work’s overall construction.

Review - French Qu'avons-nous perdu au juste en perdant l'immense culture de la rhetorique ancienne ? Cet ouvrage propose la reponse suivante : la rhetorique apprenait a acquerir un certain type de regard. Le but de son enseignement etait de former l'etudiant et futur orateur a voir un discours comme un tout. L'enjeu etait l'acces a la totalite. Une telle these oblige a reprendre un probleme tres classique, celui de la construction d'ensemble d'un ouvrage, et plus precisement d'un ouvrage fait de mots : discours d'orateur, plaidoirie d'avocat, mais aussi bien livre, poeme, piece de theatre... Ce probleme etait central pour l'age classique, soit du XVI au XVIII siecle : c'est donc la qu'il est particulierement pertinent de l'etudier.
