Le Pere Roland de Vaux, dominicain, a ete une des figures marquantes contemporaines de l’Ecole biblique et archeologique francaise de Jerusalem, fondee en 1890 par le P. Marie-Joseph Lagrange. Arrive a Jerusalem en 1933, Roland de Vaux y a vecu jusqu’a sa mort en 1971, une mort prematuree, celle d’un homme qui s’est donne tout entier a sa mission. Chercheur, professeur, archeologue, directeur de l’Ecole biblique, auteur, directeur de recherches : nombreux ont ete les domaines ou Roland de Vaux a excelle. Ses domaines preferes ont ete l’Histoire ancienne d’Israel et l’archeologie de la Terre sainte. Il est surtout connu pour son role dans les fouilles de Qumran qui ont mis au jour les manuscrits de la mer Morte. Il a aussi joue un role decisif dans la realisation de la Bible de Jerusalem, au lendemain de la Second guerre mondiale, un des nombreux conflits politiques qui ont marque son existence. Roland de Vaux a laisse de nombreux disciples, biblistes et archeologues, qui avaient trouve en lui un maitre. Cette premiere biographie qui lui est consacree relate les grands moments d’une vie vecue a vive allure, au cours de laquelle il a croise et gagne l’estime de la plupart des grands savants de son epoque.
