While the art of the first half of the seventeenth century has been the subject of extensive scholarly research, the decades following the death of Pope Alexander VII in 1667 up to the election of Clement XI Albani in 1700 remain comparatively understudied and call for further investigation. This volume is dedicated to artistic production in Rome during the second half of the seventeenth century—a period of remarkable richness and diversity that is explored here through a series of focused case studies. The unifying thread across the contributions is a close examination of the artist’s concrete practice. The essays investigate methods of teaching, modes of collaboration, workshop organization, and technical approaches to the creative process. Particular attention is also given to the transmission and dissemination of iconographic themes and motifs, as well as to the complex web of relationships between artists, patrons, and institutions. Alongside prominent figures of the Roman art scene—such as Carlo Maratti, Johann Paul Schor, and Ercole Ferrata—the volume brings to light the work of lesser-known artists who nonetheless played a vital role in shaping the vibrant artistic landscape of Baroque Rome.
