As in literature, painting, sculpture, and the history of collecting, the theme of the relations between Italy and France from the late sixteenth century to the Baroque era is a well-established subject of inquiry, supported by historical and critical contributions that have brought its complexity to light. The same cannot be said for seventeenth-century architecture, a period in which the relationship with Italian architectural culture has often been reduced to the circulation of treatises and printed books capable of satisfying both the quest for fixed rules and the knowledge of the monuments of ancient Rome. Rather than offering a systematic reading of the problem, the book focuses on specific episodes: whether the controversy surrounding a building, the inventory of an architect’s possessions, the reception of a new treatise, the career of Italian architects in France, or, conversely, of certain French architects in Italy. The study features figures such as Étienne Martellange, Jacques Le Mercier, Roland Fréart de Chambray, Paul Fréart de Chantelou, and—as involved in various events—François Sublet de Noyers, alongside Antonio Barberini, who resided in Paris between 1646 and 1669. Attention is thus directed to the years preceding or closely following the institutionalization of the voyage d’Italie, marked by the founding of the French Academy in Rome in 1666 and the questioning of the “Italian model” within the Académie Royale d’Architecture, in order to explore the phases that led to a distinctly national, all-French definition of the classical architectural language.
