Review - French Les animaux ont-ils la vertu morale ? Sont-ils capables de conduites ? Ont-ils une certaine conscience du bien ? Pratiquent-ils la justice ? Constituant un angle particulier du debat sur l'intelligence animale, ces questions connaissent leur apogee a l'epoque imperiale (Ier-IIIe siecle apr. J.-C.). Rejetee par les stoiciens sur la base de la zoopsychologie aristotelicienne, l'hypothese de l'animal vertueux est defendue par un groupe de penseurs venus d'horizons philosophiques divers : les partisans de l'intelligence animale. Cet essai reconstitue l'arriere-plan philosophique du debat antique en faisant intervenir ses notions essentielles. Mais il ouvre aussi des pistes de reflexion sur la problematique actuelle de notre rapport a l'animal.
