En marge des politiques de la memoire, elle feconde arts, discours et pratiques populaires dans de nombreux pays : ils en detournent l'heritage patrimonial afin de jouer avec la plasticite de son mythe fondateur. L'ambition de cet ouvrage est, en suivant la trace des nombreux objets et des multiples representations de la Revolution, d'interroger les usages du referent historique au sein des cultures et imaginaires contemporains. Loin de renvoyer dos a dos construction mythique et historiographie critique, il mobilise les sciences humaines et sociales pour prendre les mythologies revolutionnaires au serieux et les constituer en chantier d'etude fecond et legitime.
